Poland and Czechia - Southern Germany

 Regensburg is a nice little town on the Danube, and seemingly a starting point for luxurious river cruises. The boats certainly looked very swish.

The town centre was just a shortish walk from our parkup in a large secure carpark, all for €2 per 24 hour period.







The next stop was in Munich, to a basic site I had been to before, at the Allianz Stadium home of Bayern Munich FC. Unfortunately Harry Kane couldn't be there to greet us personally (something about a World Cup), but the stadium is impressive. Transport in was easy and cheap from a nearby rail station.

Munich is a big bustling city, with all the usual impressive buildings and, of course Bierkellers. It was, however, rammed with tourists.





The last stop in Germany, before we head into France, was a tidy site at a town called Hechingen. It's just a small town with an old town set on the top of a hill, so it was quite a climb.

The overnight ferry dropped us off in Belfast early on Friday morning, only a fifteen minute drive from our first destination - The Titanic exhibition. With time to spare until our timed entry, we just wondered around the docks area, but got no offers from any sailors. I visited the exhibition some six years ago and was impressed then, but they have actually improved it. The sense of actually being there as it was being built was strong, as was being transported through the finished liner. As we had a few hours to spare before we were allowed on the campsite, we drove to Carrickfergus and it's well preserved and looked after castle. And on the doorstep was, lo and behold, a Wetherspoons! This pleased Wallace mightily as he keeps track of all the ones he has been to. We met there a Scottish rugby on tour. Poland and Czechia - Krakow and into Slovakia

 We had intended to stay three nights in Krakow to look at Auswitz/Birkenau, the famous Wawel Royal Castle, and the salt mines at Wieliczka. However, Krakow had decided to say no. Krakow introduced a low emission zone in January, basically covering the entire city inside the ring road and unfortunately including all the camp sites. It's quite harsh, and basically won't allow in any diesel engines built before 2014. There were ways around it, but you needed to apply in advance and pay an hourly charge. Fortunately the Salt mines were outside the zone, and the allowed us (for a fee of course) to park up overnight in the car park. The salt mines themselves are huge, and they descent over 300 metres, so there is a LOT of walking involved. Apparently they have proof of the mines being used in Neolithic times to make salt lamps! I've gotta leave old Durham town, and that leaving's gonna get me down.

   Roger Whittaker knew what he was talking about with those lyrics, for Durham is a very pleasant place and we shall be sorry to move on tomorrow.   Amazon had done everything they promised, and a new water pump was waiting for us on arrival at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club. Half an hour fiddling around and all was well with the world again. The site here is compact, but tidy. We are right on the river's edge, and have access to the club facilities - unfortunately not the bar as it is too long and narrow to allow for social distancing. The first night we took a stroll along the riverside path to the edge of the city centre and back, mainly just to gauge Ann's ability to do it. She managed but would not have been able to do any more, which meant we would need a taxi for our visit to the cathedral the next day.
