Days 27 and 28 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg is on the Romantische Strasse, a route dreamt up by travel agents in the 1950 which goes from Wurzburg south through Bavaria to Fussen (where Neuschwanstein is).

What can I say about Rothenburg that does justice to it. It was a once important centre in Mediaeval times, but because of wars (mainly the Thirty Years War) and the plague it fell from grace, which perversely ensured that no money was spent on modernising it. Hence it is mostly original and still has fully intact city walls that you can walk on all the way around.

It is nearly impossible for cameras to capture just how beautiful it is, and whichever side street you look down there is yet more beauty. It is certainly very rich now on the back of tourism, but it is high level tourism. The shops are full of very expensive Steiff teddy bears, highly ornate beer steins, exotic types of salami....you get the idea.

The first call was what was described as a torture museum, but was actually a very well presented depiction of how criminality was dealt with in the past. It wasn't all about the medieval machinery we have heard of, and there was certainly no lifelike impressions. However, here's an Iron Maiden for you.

Tomorrow (Thursday) will be another day looking at all we missed today.
