Days 21,22 and 23 - Not Dresden, but Plauen.

On Tuesday, the 7th, we had a pretty long drive from Wroclaw in Poland to Dresden in Germany. There was something about Dresden on the way in that all three of us didn't like. It wasn't pleasant, and didn't look inviting.

At the campsite we had to wait for the owners to reopen after a three hour lunch break, so we had a look around it whilst we waited. There were only a few plots left (Linda had booked in advance) and those were small, uneven, and dark with overgrown foliage. It was time for a committee meeting back in the vans, and a mug of tea.

We decided that there was nothing in Dresden that we simply had to see, and that we were probably "citied out". A google session threw up some good alternatives, but we selected a lakeside site near the town of Plauen, right on the border with the Czech Republic. I rang them up and was able to book in with my beginners German, so off we went - but the roadworks on the way added over an hour to the journey and we didn't get there till after 5pm.

This is a very pleasant site, by a very pleasant reservoir that is used for sailing, swimming etc. We had plenty of room around us, excellent services - including a bar and restaurant, and friendly staff to assist. Best of all, the sun shone brightly from cloudless skies.

The nearest town, Plauen, was also very pleasant, and a good bike ride in (if you like hills). Like a lot of continental towns there were pretty squares with restaurant seating outside, some impressive buildings, and nobody seemed to be in a hurry.

Speck mit Spiegelei - bacon with "mirror" eggs. Delicious!

Yesterday was my birthday and I had decided that I didn't want a big restaurant meal. I was enjoying the campsite BBQs that we were having, so we did just that, with some fillet steak and a few bottles of good wine. Earlier we had gone out on the bikes to see a nearby huge brick built rail bridge. Part of the journey was described as a bike trail, but they didn't say it was (to us!) an Olympic level mountain bike cross country course. However, our totally unsuitable, big wheeled, skinny tyred, heavy, electric city bikes got through without anyone coming a cropper. We were impressed with ourselves!

Looks innocent, doesn't it? It wasn't!

We have had a great time here, but the tour continues. Today we travel about an hour and a half southwards to Bamberg.
