Days 18 and 19 - To Wroclaw, and a Segway tour

Saturday was a good day to travel north west from Krakow to Wroclaw. The weather had picked up and there was much less traffic on the roads. The camping site turned out to be a little gem, with good facilities and well maintained pitches.

We spent the afternoon doing some necessary admin, and ended up having a really good BBQ and a good belly laugh after probably a few too many beers.. However, I can say without fear of correction, that Polish mozzies are only beaten in ferocity by our own dear Scottish midges. Fortunately they only made themselves known after sunset.

Sunday was a first for me, and for Giles and Linda: a two hour Segway tour of interesting bits of Wroclaw that were outside of the big tourist attraction areas. Our guide was Casper, who looked a bit like Where's Wally. He was hilarious, and once he worked out that we were up for a laugh, we were treated to descriptions of places and incidents in various accents (his best was Aussie!)

The Segways themselves were a huge amount of fun, and very easy to understand and get used to. Your natural instinct is to try and turn the handlebars like a bike, but you just move the whole thing to the left or right. If you haven't done it before, try it - it's a hoot!

History lesson - In 1945 Stalin demanded part of Poland as his reward for Russian efforts in the War, So Poland was recompensed by being given part of Germany, and Breslau became Wroclaw. I should actually use the word "again", because Wroclaw had been pinched by the Prussians in 1871. Interestingly, Casper was far more critical of the Russians bombing Wroclaw than he was of the Germans occupying the city. He did not like Communists!

After the tour we wandered back into the main square, which was really pretty with some wonderful buildings surrounding it. But other squares led off this, each just a pretty and interesting. The atmosphere was very laid back and relaxed, and this may even be the best Polish city so far.

Today, Monday, we are off on a city centre walking tour named - Dwarves and Communism! You'll have to wait for the next blog to see what that is about.
